Research Interests:
In my work on ischemic preconditioning of the heart whereby a short period of blood flow cessation protects the heart against a much longer period of ischemia, I have been exploring the biochemical mechanisms of this phenomenon, examining in particular the role of cyclic AMP, protein kinase C, the angiotensin system and most recently protein tyrosine kinases in this phenomenon. An understanding of its mechanisms could lead to better protection of the heart muscle in infants undergoing cardiac surgery. Regarding biomaterials development, I am continuing to work on the development and preclinical evaluation of blood vessel replacements based on extracting cells from natural blood vessels, both arteries and veins, to allow transplantation without rejection.
